Wastewater Treatment Planning - Part 1

wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) is a physical plant where various physical, biological or chemical processes are used to change the properties of the wastewater (e.g. by removing harmful substances) in order to turn it into a type of fresh water (effluent) that can be safely discharged into the environment or that is usable for a certain reuse purpose.  The treatment of wastewater belongs to the over-arching field of sanitation, just like the management of human waste, solid waste, sewage treatmen, stormwater and drinking water treatment By-products from wastewater treatment plants, such as screenings grit chamber, sludge unit, odor removal, gases system, and other  unit. A wastewater treatment plant generally requires electrical energy to function, except for certain types of constructed wetlands but they can also produce energy  with anaerobic processes in the form of biogas. There are many kind of wastewater treatment unit which is based on the characteristic of the wastewater. The characteristic of wastewater are classified into physical, biological, and chemical properties. In planning a wastewater treatment system, there are some steps that we should do, they are feasibility study (FS), preliminary sizing (PS), detail engineering design (DED), tender, construction, comissioning, operational and maintenance. In this case, we will only focus on preliminary sizing (PS) and detail engineering design (DED).

Preliminary sizing (PS) is the step of sizing dimension of WWTP unit generally. WWTP is built by conducting some treatment units. All of the units should be sizing in order to know the area which is needed to support the WWTP. In preliminary sizing, we calculate the length, area, and the depth of each unit. Steps of preliminary sizing are:

Green Energy And What It Really Means For Your Future

Pollution it will be the evil that people release upon our planet every single day, since we power our cars, homes, and businesses. In case you are someone who sees the desire to pull from traditional sorts of energy to check out cleaner, renewable causes of energy, this short article should be helpful to you. While it is advisable to transform off your laptop or computer if you are not utilizing it, it may be a waste of energy should you it while you will only be clear of it or short amounts of time. Prior to going to bed when you know you will see hours before you use it again, it is recommended to hold back until. A fantastic tip for green energy use is to ensure that your home is properly has and insulated a very high R value with all the insulation. The most effective insulation has a higher R value. The extra insulation could keep out excessive noise externally your house, although you will not only save energy. With regards to going green you will realize that there's a lot of ways to go concerning this. The advantages not only enhance the quality of our environment, nevertheless they also make for substantial tax deductions at the end of the year. LED lights will not only wind up helping our environment but folks will also have the ability to save a lot of money on their electric bill by utilizing these light bulbs.

Use Bio Gas System to Implement Your Food-Waste Into Gas and Organic Fertilizers

Bio gas system or bio gas plant usually refers to the system of producing bio gas and organic fertilizers from your food waste. It refers to the natural gas which is produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas can be produced in a huge amount from the food waste and other raw material which are environment friendly. Biogas is a renewable fuel that can be upgraded to a natural gas which you can use in daily work life. The main benefit of biogas in daily life is that you can use it as a fuel for heating purpose in your home such as cooking. You can also use it in a gas engine to convert the gas energy into heat.
Leading bio gas system installation in Singapore Drive Change not only build the biogas system but also train academic team in a school installation to convert your food waste into bio gas for your needs. Investing in biogas system and biogas plant has become more appealing nowadays for a better future in terms of environment. Biogas not only provide energy but it also has an economic advantage as it proves to be a source of income for local people who are involved in setting up biogas plants in local places or in different cities also.

Studying environmental science is a great way to get yourself on a promising career track, protect the environment and take your pick from any number of challenging and diverse jobs. The jobs you can get with an environmental science degree are, indeed, quite diverse. Let’s have a look at some potential careers you might choose after earning your degree.

Environmental Scientist
This is the most obvious and direct job you can get with your environmental science degree. Environmental scientists study the impact humanity has on the earth through research that includes things like conducting field studies and writing environmental assessment reports. Environmental scientists work for both public organizations like governments as well as private industries to monitor environmental impacts of projects and activities.

Spring Desert Gardening Tips

While winter is still hitting hard in many states this year, March in Phoenix is typically beautiful spring weather, making it a perfect time for gardening. Eager gardeners can start as early as mid-February, but plants that are prepped and planted during March will have enough time to root and appropriately grow before summer’s heat strikes. Let's take a look what we should prepare and what we can plant.

Steps to take before planting

1. Location: there are two very important things to keep in mind when deciding on location-sun and space. Prime sun exposure will lead to healthy and flourishing plants. Avoid planting in areas right next to your home so you can prevent unwanted shade. Also, make sure plants have space to grow by not planting near trees, bushes or walls of the house. If possible, a raised garden bed is recommended to make soil preparation easier.

Benefits of Using Alternative & Green Energy Sources

Whenever people are talking about ways on how to save energy, one of the useful ideas that experts have already tested and tried is the use of alternative & green energy sources. There are various sources of energy that can be used by anyone especially those who need a large amount of energy without the risk of spending too much money on other resources. These ideas were not only made for those who are trying to cut back on their energy expenses but also for those people who are trying to make use of alternative sources that are environment friendly.

Recycling E Waste for Healthy and Eco-friendly Environment

We use various electronic products in our daily personal and professional lives. The digital and interactive media are meant to speed up our communication process and the types of information we deal via these sources are called infotainment. It is always advisable to donate electronic items and gadgets as this process brings the items in reuse thereby increasing the longevity of valuable products. Reuse of electronics prevents expensive materials from going into the ravage stream. Now a day, many companies have sprung up which offer various sponsor programs to motivate corporate and private organizations to initiate electronic products recycling.

Why You Should Recycle Domestic Waste

Many people are so attached of their belongings that they barely dare to get rid of them, even if this means keeping the old armchair nobody uses anymore, or the antique magazines which are already irrelevant. For this reason, there are specialized companies providing house clearance London services, to east the job of those who actually decide to remove and even recycle the useless items from their houses. Domestic waste can be removed by a wide range of service providers, but it is extremely important to be aware of the importance of this practice people consider more and more necessary nowadays. The increasing preoccupation as far as the environment is concerned has led to the appearance of many companies activating in the field of rubbish removal London, since public authorities sometimes do not meet the expectations of the citizens. In addition to this, besides reducing the amount of waste that goes to junkyards, recycling and separation of domestic garbage helps minimizing environmental pollution. Although some consider useless to select their garbage and throw it to different containers, if you think about all the waste accumulated, this actually has effect on the level of pollution of the settlements where we live.

Sustainability in Contemporaneous Lifestyle

Built on a thickly forested site at Alibaug, this weekend home is an exemplary model of sustainable living right from the choice of vernacular architecture and materiality to water harvesting and site treatment. In fact, only exposed patches on the site were chosen for construction thereby minimizing intervention to the natural topography. As a corollary, the design of this residence is fragmented in and around the 2.3 acre site interconnected (for privacy) through a series of courts and multiple water bodies.

10 Environmental Issues Facing Our Planet

Although the top 10 environmental issues that face the planet can be at best “subjective” we have attempted to aggregate and prioritise the list in order to put things into perspective.

Population

Without a doubt the biggest issue facing the environment is over population of humans. All other major environmental issues flow from the very fact that we are over populating the planet. The worlds population has tripled in the last 60 years placing stress on every aspect of the environment. More land is developed every day to accommodate the urban spread. In 1950 the population stood at 2,555,982,611 compared to 2012 which it now stands at over 7,000,000,000. The actual maths is that the worlds population has increased by almost 3 times. That is staggering when you think about it. That figure is increasing even as we speak!

Supermarkets Will Give Discarded Food to Homeless

Now it should be easy for the country's stores to donate discarded food to the most needy of society. It believes consumerist Stop Wasting Food that spring launches project 'surplus food'. Instead of throwing goods in a container to food could write into an electronic system which food they rid themselves of, and when it can be retrieved. It gets organizations in the local area who work with socially disadvantaged, message, and then they can collect the goods, explains project manager of 'surplus food', Thomas Fremming

"We will create a simple and straightforward system that creates a network between local businesses and organizations. For many it is incredibly border to go to a grocery store and ask for food. Here our project work as an older brother who keeps organizations in the hand and opens some doors. "

In addition to reducing food waste and ensure food to be places such as shelters, refugee centers and women's centers, the project will also help to create community activities, says Thomas Fremming. He imagines, among other things, that local organizations can arrange common meals together and that volunteers will help to cook. "These organizations have a variety of different foods that can release resources and boosting activities such as holding a Christmas party. I see a lot of positive possibilities in this, "he said.

10 Breakfast for Starting Your Lucky Day!

Boost the planet's health -- not to mention your own -- with essential strategies for eating well every day. The organic-versus-local debate rages on. On the one hand, organic food is grown without pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which require loads of energy to make and contaminate soil and groundwater when they're put to use. But given that food travels an average of 1,500 miles before it lands on your plate, eating locally has the edge when it comes to using less transportation energy. Where does that leave you? Strive to eat as locally and organically as you can. Admittedly, that's easier in certain locales than others; check out local harvest.org to find a farm near you.
The next time you rush out the door in the morning without something to eat, consider this: Skipping breakfast can set you up for overeating later in the day. A healthy a.m. meal, on the other hand, can give you energy, satisfy your appetite, and set the stage for smart decisions all day long.Let's check this out, some kinds of simple and quick breakfast for starting your day.

The Kingdom of Plastic

Who doesn't know plastic? Everyday all people use plastic to help them for carrying and storing their stuff. Plastic is a common to all people. In general, all plastic look the same, although with different color and size. Spesifically, there are many types of plastic, based on their usage.  Let's we learn more about plastic.

Plastic 1: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE)
Commonly recycled, PET is semi-rigid and very lightweight. It's best suited for single-use containers as it can break down when exposed to light and heat, causing it to leach. PET can also be recycled into fabric, similar in strength and appearance to virgin nylon. Plastic marked with an SPI code of 1 is made with polyethylene terephthalate, which is also known as PETE or PET. PETE-based containers sometimes absorb odors and flavors from foods and drinks that are stored inside of them. Items made from this plastic are commonly recycled. PETE plastic is used to make many common household items like beverage bottles, medicine jars, peanut butter jars, combs, bean bags, and rope. Recycled PETE is used to make tote bag carpet, fiberfill material in winter clothing, and more.

How to Analyze: Solid Waste Generation and Composition Sampling

In a solid waste management planning, we need some informations about the existing condition of solid waste itself. Based on solid waste management literature, solid waste management should be adjusted to the generation and its characteristics for efficiency and effectiveness.Tchobanoglous et al (1993) mentions about the classification of solid waste based on their source, they are:
1. Residential waste: foodwaste, paper, leather, yardwaste, ash, wood, plastic, and hazard
2. Commercial waste: paper, plastic, carton, metal, wood, foodwaste
3. Institutional waste: paper, plastic, wood, foodwaste, glass
4. Constructional waste: wood, metal, steel, concrete, ash
5. City service waste: yardwaste, plastic, paper
6. Processing building waste: sludge, ash
7. Industrial waste: ash, hazardous waste, plastic
8. Agricultural waste: foodwaste, hazardous waste
Solid waste generation is the amount of waste generated by the source in certainly unit of time. Generation rate is affected by the amount of population, industrial level, social economy, and commercial activity in the society (Babayemi et al., 2009). Solid waste generation is the effect of production and consumption of the society in every economic level. This solid waste generation is related to solid waste management, such as equipments, routing, recycling facilities, and final disposal facilities.
Solid waste composition is the representative of each constituent and its distribution of the waste and expressed in persentage of weight (%). Composition of solid waste is very important to plan or evaluate the equipment needed, system and program management of solid waste, and handling system. Solid waste constituents is classified into organic and anorganic waste. Organic waste such as: foodwaste, paper, plastic, leather, cloth, rubber, yardwaste and woods. Anorganic waste such as glass, tin, metal, and steel (Tchobanoglous et all., 1993). Upadhyay et all., (2012), classify the solid waste composition into 4 class, they are:
1. Recyclable waste: paper, plastic, glass, metal
2. Poisonous waste: paint, pesticide, insecticide, battery, and drugs
3. Compostable waste: foodwaste, leaves, yardwaste, vegetables, fruits
4. Infectious waste: blood, syringe, laboraturium waste, cotton waste
All of waste composition will affect the waste density, disposal technique, and potencial of reuse, reduction, and recycle processing.
In this part, I want to share about how to do solid waste generation and composition analysis based on Indonesia Standard Method: SNI 19-3964-1994

1. Location
Sampling location is divided into 2 types, they are residential and non residential.
Residential:
- Permanent with high economic level
- Semi permanent with medium economic level
- Non permanent with low economic level
Non Residential: shop, office, school, market, street, hotel, restaurant, public facilities

2. Frequency
Sampling conducted in 8 days continuously, in same location, in the middle time of dry and wet season.

3. Measurement and calculation
- The units used for generation measurement are liter/unit/day and kg/unit/day
- The units used for composition  measurement is persentage (%)
- Volume measurement use a container in size of 40 Liter with weight measurement before
- Volume measurement use a container in size of 500 Liter with weight measurement before

4. Tools and Equipment
- Plastic bag with volume of 40 Liter
- Volume measurement container in size of 20 cm x 20 cm x 100 cm with height scale sign
- Volume measurement container in size of 50 cm x 50 cm x 100 cm with height scale sign
- Weigher with scale 0-5 kg and 0-100 kg
- Moving tools and gloves
5. Action
a. Spesify the sampling site
b. Spesify the number of surveyor
c. Prepare the tools and equipment
d. Distribute the plastic bag with certainly sign to the host of waste source a day before we begin
e. Record the number of each waste source
f.  Collect all of the plastic bag which is already filled with trash

How to Make: Recycled Bottle Bag

Generally, we know that amount of solid waste are increasing along with population growth. There are many action which is done in managing the solid waste (trash, rubbish, garbage). One of the ways in managing solid waste is 3R (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). The primary aim of 3R is to decreasing the amount of solid waste in environment by reducing disposable product, reusing usable thing, and recycling into a new product. In this chance, I would like to share about my experience in recycling bottled water. I called it Bottle Bag, a recycled, simple, unique, and useful product.

Figure 1. There are so many plastics waste (thesis research, 2014)

How to Make: Reusable Bag

When we went to the supermarket to buy for household needs, usually we didn't bring our bag. The cashier will give us plastic bag as shopping bag. If all people in the supermarket are using plastic bag, can we imagine how many plastics will become trash? In some shop, there has been a policy to decrease the amount of plastic bag consumption. We have to pay more if we want to get plastic bag or using degradable plastic material. Not only bag, but also other things like tumblr, lunch box, paper, refillable pencil, glass, etc. Now, I want to share to all of you, one of my creation in making a reusable bag. I worked with my team to make a business plan in providing a bag which is reusable and unique. Our brand is Imagination Bag, you can visit our page on Imagination Bag on Facebook
